A friend who I often mail has asked me to download msn messenger. I
have had a quick look at it and I am amazed that it can also be used
with a microphone for making long distance phone type calls. Is this
any good or are there more problems than it is worth. I am thinking
along the lines of always being available pestering from folks who
have my details or any other snags that I have not though of? Any help
appreciated.

MSN Messager is very good. To really make it extra special, you will need to
get a webcam and microphone. If it offers you to make a profile, don't
bother making one.

I can't say that I am very keen on having a webcam David but the idea
of having a microphone rather tickled my fancy if it meant I could use
my BT BB to speak to folks all over the world without paying BT
anymore money. Basically if I install msn messenger though and just
use it in connection with my keyboard is it much of a job for an
amateur like me and is there any point to it? I am intrigued by the
idea but I don't really want to have trouble finding usb ports and
things like that. Also I only use msn when I am answering or checking
my e-mail so would it work when I am using agent like now? This is
something completely new to me if you could explain a little bit more
about it I would be grateful.

It's alright I guess. People use it too much though. It's going to prove
problematic in the future, most teens are already addicted.

MSN isn't very good software IMO. The protocol (or maybe the servers) is
terrible, messages get dropped all over the place. AIM is better in that
regard.

I use a single piece of software to combine the function of MSN, AIM, ICQ,
Y!Pager and Jabber. http://trillian.cc/

It's better because it's a unified interface and things aren't cluttered up
with advertisements. I actually paid for the 2.0 version, the only piece of
software I've ever paid money for. You can still download a free version.

I'm not sure how the MSN phone system works. I think you'd need some sort of
VoIP provider to call land lines.

This is fascinating Wayne and David. I have just looked at the
Trillian site and it is obviously better than the msn version because
it can unite all other brands on messenger. How does this effect
Norton Firewall and AV that I have and of course the mail washer.
Sorry if I am asking silly questions but this is all completely new to
me and seem very interesting except as Wayne has said, the pester
power it gives others who know my addy.

Anti-virus shouldn't mind, and the firewall will probably ask you if you
want to grant server and outgoing traffic permissions to Trillian, which you
should enable.

Pester power is an issue, but you can of course block troublemakers and only
authorise people who you want to talk to you.

Yes I suppose it is with folks who do not check their mail regularly

The point is, it's instant. MSMessenger doesn't deliver messages to
ofline users, only to ones there and able to receive them, and reply if
they want. ICQ does do that which tends to make it my preferrred
program.

I've never bothered with the voice part but there was a guy used to be
on ntl talk used it. he's not around just now, various life problems
got in the way, so I can't ask him how it all sets up.

Trillian is a good way of combining the various sorts of message progs,
but I am not certain if you can easily use it to sign up with them or if
you need to use the originals for that? I don't know because I had them
all before I ever saw Trillian. The various progs give you lots of
preferences about being seen online, or not, or only to those you want
to see you. Trillian does it too, not so many options though. They all
do similar things and the problem with Trillian is getting it to do what
each of the others can do - bit of fiddling around but nice once done.
You might prefer to start with MSNMessenger as a standalone then
transfer to Trillian later.

I had the wrong idea of instant messenger. I got the idea that it
could be used to make free 'phone calls to those who do not have a pc.
I have discovered this can be done but it involves subscribing to a
voice audio company. That makes it less attractive in fact it makes it
unattractive so I shall not be using it after all as anyone who needs
to contact me can do so by e-mail and I can answer at my pace. If it
was urgent most folks on here would just ring me so I have decided
against using any type of instant messenger but thank you kat and
Wayne and David for taking the time to explain all this to me.
